Fox Squirrel
Sciuris niger
Fox squirrels got their name from their gray and red fur coat that resemble that of a gray fox. Fox squirrels are large tree squirrels. Both eastern gray and eastern fox squirrels were brought from the Eastern United States in the early 1900s and have been increasing their range and population ever since, both on their own and from humans deliberately spreading them through the state, resulting in damage to the native environment, agriculture, and property. Meanwhile, the western gray squirrel has decreased in range and abundance.
